Donata Marino

A lifelong resident of the Lake of the Ozarks, Donata Marino has spent years trying to ignore the strange things she couldn't explain. Now the secrets her mother left behind are beginning to surface.

For most of her life, Donata Marino has been trying to explain away the things that never quite made sense. The migraines that arrive before storms, the emotions she senses from animals before they react, and the persistent feeling that something about her has always been slightly disconnected from the world around her.

Practical, guarded, and stubbornly independent, Donata built a quiet life near the Lake of the Ozarks around routines she could control. She learned to ignore the strange moments she couldn't explain and focused instead on the ordinary life her mother worked so hard to give her.

But ordinary lives have a way of unraveling. As impossible memories begin surfacing and violent storms roll across the lake, Donata finds herself pulled toward a truth that has been hidden since childhood. The answers she seeks are buried in secrets her mother spent decades trying to protect.

Whether she is ready or not, those secrets are finally waking up.

And they have been waiting for her.

Magnus

More than a dog, Magnus has been Donata's constant for as long as she can remember.

Image description

An enormous white Great Pyrenees with an old scar across his snout and dark, intelligent eyes, he has always been more than just a pet. He follows Donata from room to room, reacts to emotions before they are spoken aloud, and seems to understand far more than any ordinary dog should.

According to veterinarians, Magnus’s age should not be possible. At over thirty-five years old, he has lived far beyond the normal lifespan of any Great Pyrenees ever recorded, something Donata stopped trying to explain years ago. Around the lake, people jokingly refer to him as a Missouri miracle. Donata knows there is more to it than that.

Calm and patient most of the time, Magnus carries the quiet confidence of something ancient and deeply rooted. He rarely wastes energy, but when Donata is threatened, the gentleness disappears instantly beneath a level of protectiveness that can become frighteningly intense.

Their connection goes beyond instinct. Donata does not fully understand it yet, but Magnus feels her emotions almost as strongly as she feels his. Fear, exhaustion, grief, relief. The bond between them moves both ways.

To most people, Magnus is simply a loyal dog.

To Donata, he has always felt like home.

Falp

A stranger from another world who seems to know Donata better than she knows herself.

Image description

He appears in Donata's life the night storms roll across the lake and crows begin throwing themselves against the office windows. Tall, guarded, and carrying himself with the quiet restraint of someone used to surviving alone, Falp unsettles people almost immediately. His silver eyes, measured words, and constant calm hint at a life shaped by hardship, while beneath that composure lies an exhaustion and guilt he rarely allows anyone to see.

Falp comes from Capheleon, a world Donata has never heard of. Practical to the point of bluntness, he notices more than he says and seems to know far more about Donata's life than he should. As she searches for answers, he becomes both her guide and one of her greatest mysteries. Donata isn't entirely sure she should trust him either.

Aunt Addy

The closest thing Donata has to family, and the keeper of more answers than she is willing to share.

Image description

Long before Donata began uncovering the truth about Capheleon, Addy was a constant presence in her life. As Elena's closest friend, she spent years helping maintain the ordinary world Elena worked so hard to build for her daughter. Practical, fiercely loyal, and trusted completely, she became "Aunt Addy" long before anyone could remember when the title started, standing beside Elena through loss, uncertainty, and decades of shared history.

When impossible events begin unraveling, Addy is pulled into a world she never asked to understand. But her devotion to Elena's family has never depended on having all the answers. Not every guardian carries a weapon. Some carry a casserole dish, a spare key, and a lifetime of unwavering loyalty.

Arthur

A man whose past is far more complicated than anyone realizes.

Image description

Tucked away in a small repair shop off a forgotten stretch of Missouri highway, Arthur has spent decades fixing radios, televisions, and anything else thought to be beyond repair. To most customers, he is a gruff craftsman with an endless supply of bad coffee. The truth is considerably more complicated.

When Donata first walks through his door, she's simply looking for someone to repair a broken cassette tape, completely unaware that the man behind the counter holds answers that could change everything she believes about her past.

Arthur knew Elena Marino long before her daughter arrived at his shop. He watched Elena build a life in the Ozarks, guard her secrets, and prepare for a future she hoped would never come. Practical and observant, Arthur notices details everyone else misses. Somewhere beneath the dust, solder, and stacks of forgotten electronics, he has been keeping watch for a very long time. He knows far more about Capheleon than he is ever willing to say.

Elena Marino

A mother whose secrets continue to shape her daughter's life long after she is gone.

Image description

For more than twenty years, Elena Marino built a quiet life in the Missouri Ozarks, carefully protecting the ordinary world she wanted for her daughter. To most people, she was practical, organized, and endlessly prepared. The kind of woman who always had a plan and rarely explained why. Those closest to her knew she carried burdens she never spoke about, all tied to a future she hoped would never come.

Long before Donata began searching for answers, Elena was already making impossible choices to protect her family. The truth she left behind may be the only thing capable of saving the people she loved, or the very thing that finally places them in danger.
